— Painting the Threads of Country
There are artists who paint pictures, and there are artists who paint belonging. Maggie Gleeson Briscoe Pennnagke is the latter.
Born in 1953, Maggie is an Anmatyerre woman whose deep roots reach into the red earth of Yuelamu (Mt Allen) in the Northern Territory — a place of ancient stories, family, and ancestral connection that has shaped every brushstroke of her remarkable journey.
A Journey Back to Country
For many years, Maggie carried a quiet yearning — a pull toward family and country that wouldn't be silenced. That longing eventually led her to Alice Springs, where she found something extraordinary: her Central Australian Briscoe family, and with them, a rekindling of bonds that time and distance had stretched but never broken.
That homecoming changed everything.
Through those reunions, Maggie discovered not only family but a calling — a deep recognition of her ancestral ties to the desert country of the Anmatyerre people. With that recognition came gifts: stories, connection, and the sacred permission to paint certain aspects of her cultural heritage. It is an honour she holds with great care and gratitude.
Art as Healing, Art as Bridge
Maggie's inspiration is beautifully simple and profoundly powerful: connecting people to country. Her works carry the richness of First Nations culture, the wonder of the natural world, and a generosity of spirit that invites everyone — Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike — into a deeper appreciation of Australia's oldest living culture.
What moves Maggie most is witnessing the moment someone finds healing in her art. That joy — seeing a painting touch a person's heart, calm a restless spirit, or spark curiosity about Country — is the very heartbeat of her practice.
Through her art, Maggie shares threads of the deep and rich historical tapestry woven by the Anmatyerre people across tens of thousands of years. Each piece is a story. Each story is a gift.
Wearing Country, Carrying Culture
Maggie's artwork extends beyond canvas. Her designs can be found on beautifully crafted Aboriginal scarves and organiser bags — wearable and functional pieces that bring First Nations artistry into everyday life. Each item is a conversation starter, a connection to Country, and a reminder of the living culture that continues to breathe and grow through artists like Maggie.
An Invitation
Maggie's work is an open hand, extended to anyone willing to look a little closer at this land and its first people. In her paintings, you'll find not just art — you'll find memory, healing, family, and the enduring spirit of a culture that has always known how to listen to Country.
We hope you find something of yourself in it too.
